Большой район в Северном Манхэттене [ Upper Manhattan] в г. Нью-Йорке, традиционно считающийся негритянским гетто [ ghetto]. Впервые в этой местности поселились голландцы в 1658, назвав ее в честь голландского города "Новым Хаарлемом" (Nieuw Haarlem). До начала XIX в. оставался сельскохозяйственным районом. Железная дорога, построенная в 1830, соединила его с Южным Манхэттеном [ Lower Manhattan] и сделала популярным летним курортом, что привело к развитию здесь жилищного строительства. В начале нашего века здесь стали селиться афро-американцы [ Afro-Americans], и к 1920 в нем проживала самая многочисленная городская негритянская община в стране (более 150 тыс. человек). Несмотря на социальные проблемы, вызванные перенаселенностью и трущобами, перед второй мировой войной Гарлем стал интеллектуальным и культурным центром [ Harlem Renaissance]. Причинами упадка после войны стали быстрый прирост населения и проявления расовой дискриминации. Жилищные проблемы Гарлема усугубились массовой иммиграцией пуэрториканцев в восточную часть района, сейчас известную как Испанский Гарлем [ Spanish Harlem] или "Баррио" [El Barrio; barrio]. Начиная с 60-х гг., федеральные и городские власти предпринимают интенсивные усилия по улучшению условий жизни жителей Гарлема [Harlemites].
